SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — A Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office deputy has been placed on temporary leave after shooting and killing a man while responding to a call for service.

On June 30, just after 3 a.m., police were sent to a home on Spotswood Drive for a domestic disturbance involving a gun. Once there, deputies say they saw a man point a gun at a woman. As a result, one of the deputies fired his gun, shooting the man.

Deputies say they provided aid until EMS arrived. The 38-year-old man, later identified as Kenneth Carr Jr, was pronounced dead before being taken to an area hospital. The woman was not injured.

The deputy who shot and killed the man has been placed on leave while police investigate the circumstances around the shooting.

Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff.
