LANDOVER HILLS, Md. — A brazen ATM theft was caught on camera early Thursday morning. Now, police are searching for the people responsible.
The owners of 5 & Twelve Food Mart at 7001 Annapolis Road shared surveillance video of the brazen crime with WUSA9. According to the camera's time stamp, it happened just after 2:30 a.m. The video shows two people in hooded sweatshirts attach chains to the store's front gate, and pull it off.
The force of the car rips the gate off the front of the business, smashes windows and tears the front door off its hinges.
The two men then run inside and make off with the store's ATM.
The owners told WUSA9 they have been in business for 25 years and have never had to deal with anything like this.
Police are still searching for the people seen in the video. Anyone with information that might help investigators should call Prince George's County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.
Just last week, thieves in Montgomery County drove a car into a Silver Spring grocery store and stole that store's ATM as well, along with two cash registers.
“They drove full speed from the street to here three times," said Francis Addai, the owner of Global International Grocery. He's had this store on New Hampshire Avenue in the Hillandale corridor of Silver Spring for over a decade.
“Once they get them, I know they can take them off the streets, so this doesn’t happen to the next person or even to me again," he said.
Montgomery County Police continue to investigate the theft. Police have not said whether they believe the two crimes are connected.
