COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Since the start of September, the University of Maryland (UMD) has witnessed a significant rise in e-scooter thefts on campus, with over 70 reports of stolen scooters. As e-scooters have become increasingly popular among students, they have also caught the eye of thieves.
UMD Police issued an advisory, warning students to be vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their e-scooters. The department is stepping up its efforts to combat this growing issue, but they’re also calling on the community to help prevent further thefts.
Why are e-scooters a target?
E-scooters are lightweight, easy to move, and relatively simple to steal when left unsecured. They offer thieves a quick and valuable target. As UMD’s Police Department explained, theft remains the most commonly reported crime on campus, and e-scooters have added to that statistic in recent weeks.

- Always lock your scooter: Don’t leave your e-scooter unattended without securing it.
- Choose the right lock: Opt for a U-type lock instead of a cable or chain lock. U-locks are more secure, while cables and chains can be cut or easily manipulated.
- Lock the right parts: Secure your e-scooter through the most solid part, such as the folding mechanism, rather than through weak points like handlebars or wheels.
- Use proper anchors: Always lock your e-scooter to a bike rack, not a handrail or parking post, which could make it easier for thieves to remove.

In response to the surge in thefts, UMD’s Police Department has implemented several strategies to protect the community, including:
- Increased surveillance: Utilizing Security Operations Center (SOC) cameras to monitor high-risk areas.

UMD’s Criminal Investigations Unit has already made progress, identifying and charging numerous suspects involved in these thefts. One individual is linked to nine separate cases.
