WASHINGTON — Two teenagers were shot in broad daylight outside the King Greenleaf Recreation Center in Southwest D.C.
Police officers received the call of shots fired on the 1200 block of First Street Southwest just before 3:30 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers found the victims who were transported to an area trauma center conscious and breathing. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
D.C. Police are looking for a red or maroon-colored Toyota Rav4 with Maryland Tags as a result of the incident.
The double shooting brings the total number of minors shot in the District to five since Friday.
"It's so sad though, I don't like it. There are kids out here, and they don't give a you-know-what. They don't care," said a concerned grandmother who told WUSA9 that she heard about ten gunshots from her home.
She stepped outside to check on her 14-year-old grandson as he played basketball while investigators sifted through the evidence at the scene. She has been living in the area for a decade, and for the first time, she is considering purchasing a gun to protect herself and her family.
"I know how to shoot," she told reporters.
The double shooting happened as D.C. voters cast their early ballots and children played outside.
On Oct. 4, a shootout between two groups shattered the front window of the King Greenleaf Recreation Center as children practiced football inside. Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen called the incident "unacceptable".
"There is some conflict going on among a small group of people, small individuals, and we really got to take that aggressively," told Allen to WUSA9 following a meeting with D.C. officials regarding the shooting.
