Men charged with hate bias incident, wrote racial slurs inside University of Maryland residence hall, detectives say

A staff member found racial slurs against the Black community inside La Plata Hall last year.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Two men have been arrested and charged in connection to a hate bias incident that occurred last year on the University of Maryland's campus.

On April 29, 2023, at 9:18 a.m., officers responded to La Plata Hall at the University of Maryland for a hate bias incident. A staff member found racial slurs against the Black community inside a residence hall on the eighth floor. 

At 1:41 p.m., that same day, officers returned to La Plata Hall to find even more racial slurs written on the eighth and ninth floors. 

After reviewing video footage and evidence, detectives determined who the suspects were.

On Feb. 8,  detectives applied for charges and a criminal summons was issued for Hayden Pritchard and Sergio Delgado. 

Hayden Pritchard was charged with one count of damage to religious property and one count of trespassing. Sergio Delgado was charged with one count of trespassing. 

According to a statement issued by the university, they have no student records for either individuals.
