WASHINGTON — A man is in custody in connection to a deadly summer shooting kin Southeast, D.C. that left two men dead and two other people injured, including a little girl.
On Thursday, DC Police announced the arrest of 25-year-old Andre Greene on murder charges cconnected to a shooting on July 18. The shooting occurred around 11:20 a.m. in the 2200 block of Alabama Avenue. When officers arrived they found four people suffering from gunshot wounds -- three men and 2-year-old Emily.
Two of the men, 29-year-old Lamont Street and 50-year-old Jermaine Proctor, were pronounced dead at the scene. Emily and the third man shot were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
WUSA9 spoke with Emily's grandmother following the shooting and she told us Emily had just began classes at Creative Corners Early Learning Center just two week prior to the shooting. The class was out on their routine morning walk when the shooting began. Emily was unfortunately caught in the crossfire and shot in the stomach and arm.
According to police, multiple people exited a car and started shooting in an attempt to target a group of men in the same area as the children.
Police said Thursday that the shooters had targeted the two men killed, and that they have recovered both cars involved in the shooting.
"We would like to thank our community for their assistance with this case," MPD Captain Jeffrey Wade said. "We know the brazenness of the suspects in this case shocked the community and we appreciate their cooperation with the investigation."
Since the shooting, police have increased patrol in the neighborhood. They said that there are now constant patrol units assigned to the day care.
Greene was charged with premeditated first-degree murder while armed. However, he was not the only person involved in the shooting, and police are still searching for additional suspects. They have not specified how many shooters they're actively looking for.
