WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Tis the season for porch pirates stealing your packages before you get home, but some thieves are now going as far as to steal the packages before they even arrive at your door.
D.C. police said they are investigating after two package trucks were robbed within 24 hours in the District.
According to a D.C. police report, a U.S. Postal Service vehicle was robbed and stolen in Northwest on Monday. Packages, mail and the drivers' personal items were taken, police said.
In a statement from a U.S. Postal Inspector, the company said they are working with law enforcement.
"We work to ensure America’s confidence in the U.S. Mail by enforcing more than 200 federal laws in investigations of crimes that may adversely affect postal customers who fraudulently use the U.S. Mail or the postal system," Michael Martel, a US Postal Inspector, said Tuesday.
An Amazon delivery van was also stolen in Baltimore Monday. Police found the vehicle a few hours later, less than two miles from where it was taken.
On Tuesday, a UPS truck was robbed in Southeast D.C.
"We're thankful that our driver is safe, and we're working with the responding authorities on their investigation," a statement from UPS said.
These robberies come during the height of package delivery season, as USPS will process and deliver 200 million parcels this week alone.
Police have not announced if any of the suspects involved have been identified or arrested.
