Man turns himself in after chaotic shooting near Dunbar High School

DC Police announced 18-year-old Justice Thomas turned himself in to police in connection to a shooting near Dunbar High School Tuesday afternoon.

WASHINGTON — An 18-year-old is in custody in connection to a shooting near a D.C. high school.

On Wednesday, DC Police announced Justice Thomas turned himself in to police in connection to the shooting that happened near Dunbar High School on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, a 17-year-old girl was walking along Morgan Street just after 3 p.m. when a car approached her. Two suspects jumped out of the car and tried to rob the girl at gunpoint.

Police say Thomas drove up in a separate car, got out, and pulled out a gun. This led to an exchange of gunshots between Thomas and the two suspects. During the shooting, the 17-year-old was struck by a bullet in her back.

The girl was driven back to Dunbar to receive help. From there she was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It is unclear if Thomas was trying to help the young girl being robbed or if he was targeting the two suspects. At this time police are still trying to figure out whose gunfire is responsible for wounding the girl.

Police are still searching for the two suspects from the initial robbery. There's no description of the suspects at this time.

Thomas is currently being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
