WASHINGTON — A 16-year-old boy has died after a high-speed crash on the D.C., Maryland border. Police are still working to learn exactly what happened and speak to those involved.
According D.C. Police, the crash happened just after midnight on Sept. 14. Investigators believe a black 2016 Hyundai Elantra and a white 2020 Hyundai Elantra were speeding northbound on Southern Avenue Southeast. Both Hyundais were stolen, police said.
Both vehicles crossed into oncoming traffic and struck each other. The black Hyundai stopped in the 4300 block of Southern Avenue Southeast. The white Hyundai struck a tree before coming to a stop nearby. Everyone inside both vehicles ran off following the crash. The only person who remained on scene was the 16-year-old boy. The boy was taken to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
About a week later, on Friday, the boy died from his injuries at the hospital. He has been identified as Kavonte Whatley of Northeast D.C.
