Man wanders from Takoma Park crash scene, discovered shot in the leg near hospital

Police are searching for a passenger who left the scene of the crash.

TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Police are still searching for answers after a man crashed his car and was subsequently found with a gunshot wound to his leg. Investigators are still looking for a passenger who was in the car at the time of the crash, but left.

It all started around 8 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Maple Avenue and Sligo Creek Parkway in Takoma Park. That's where officers responded to a report of a crash. Once on scene, the Takoma Park Police officers found a disabled vehicle that had been involved in the crash. There was no one inside.

Investigators learned a short time later that the driver, only identified as a man, had been found near the old Washington Adventist Hospital. He had collapsed outside, and appeared to have been shot in the leg.

According to a witness statement, a front seat passenger had left the scene. Police conducted a search for the passenger with Park Police and Montgomery County Police Department’s K9 unit, but the passenger was not found.

The wounded man was taken to an area hospital where he is recovering in stable condition.

Preliminarily, police believe the shooting happened somewhere else, and the driver and passenger drove away before crashing the car. Police do not believe there is any threat to the community.

They ask anyone who may have more information to contact Takoma Park Police at 301-270-1100.
