Suspect arrested in 2001 cold case of Chevy Chase woman found murdered in home

Montgomery County police said Eugene Teodor Gligor, 44, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Leslie Preer.

WASHINGTON — The Montgomery County Police Department said Tuesday a man had been arrested in connection with the 23-year-old old cold case of a woman found murdered in her Chevy Chase home.

Eugene Teodor Gligor, 44, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in D.C. on a charge of first-degree murder. He was being held at the D.C. Jail pending an extradition request from Maryland authorities.

Gligor is accused of killing Leslie Preer, who was found murdered inside her home in the 4800 block of Drummond Avenue in Chevy Chase in 2001 after she did not show up for work. With no arrests and no leads, Preer’s death eventually became a cold case. Police most recently offered a $10,000 reward in 2022 for anyone with information that led to the arrest of a suspect.

According to a release from police, later that year, blood evidence collected from the scene in 2001 was submitted to a lab for forensic genealogical DNA analysis. Detectives then identified Gligor as a potential suspect.

On June 9. Investigators collected DNA evidence belonging to Gligor and compared it to the DNA recovered from the crime scene. According to police, the two samples were a positive match.

A warrant for Gligor’s arrest was obtained Saturday and he was taken into custody Tuesday.

Because he was arrested in D.C., Gligor will make an initial appearance in D.C. Superior Court for arraignment. If he waives further extradition proceedings, he could be picked up by Maryland authorities within three days. If not, an extradition hearing will be set within 30 days.
