Sister of man beaten to death wants the parents of the girls accused of killing him to face charges as well

Reggie Brown was found dead along Georgia Avenue in D.C. on Oct. 17, 2023. Officials say he was beaten to death.

WASHINGTON — Court proceedings continue in the death of a 64-year-old D.C. man who was found dead in an alley in Northwest last year.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), 64-year-old Reggie Brown was found dead along Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. on Oct. 17, 2023. Officials say he was beaten to death. Since then, five girls, as young as 12, have been arrested and charged with murder.

Brown's family was in the courtroom Tuesday as prosecutors questioned the MPD detective who worked on the case.

The detective said Brown was found lying on his back, partially clothed and had cuts on his head and face, as well as blood on his hands.

In previous court hearings, prosecutors played a video of the attack that was reportedly recorded by the girls. The video showed five young girls and a man chasing Brown into an alley, then captured the people kicking Brown as he lay in a pool of blood. Afterward, the camera turned as the girls took selfies.

In the same court appearance, one of the 13-year-old defendants interrupted proceedings and punched a U.S. Marshal. She was later taken away from court on a stretcher.

In Tuesday's proceedings, the courtroom watched a different video of an interview room as the detective questioned one of the girls accused of beating Brown to death.

Among those in the courtroom was Brown's family. His sister and niece told WUSA9 they want the maximum penalty for the five girls accused of killing Brown. Another sister also said she wants the parents of the girls to be held responsible.

"I think there should be new laws set on the parents of these children, they should charged with neglect," said Brown's sister Nasia Israel.

The sisters told WUSA they are planning to attend court every single day because he was their youngest brother.
