At least 1 person dead in Montgomery County shooting, police say

The shooting happened in the vicinity of Colony Road and Northampton Drive in Silver Spring.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — At least one person is dead following a shooting in Silver Spring early Wednesday morning.

Authorities in Montgomery County responded to a report of multiple people shot early Wednesday morning. Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, tweeted that crews were responding to the reported shooting around 4:30 a.m.

The shooting happened in the vicinity of Colony Road and Northampton Drive in Silver Spring, according to Piringer. That's near the Northwest Park Apartments. Piringer reported multiple people had been shot, but it's not yet clear how many people were involved, or the severity of their injuries Wednesday morning.

Police confirmed they were investigating a reported shooting but were tight-lipped about the circumstances.

In a statement to press, Officer Cassandra Durham with the Montgomery County Police Department said that when officers arrived, they found a deceased body in the area. Durham could not confirm additional details, saying the investigation is still in its early stages.

"This is a tragic event for our community. We are looking into anything we possibly can," Durham said.

Police did not offer any information about a possible suspect or suspects, and have not said what the motive may have been. No arrests have been made.

Anyone who may have information about this case is asked to call police at 1-866-411-TIPS.
