Silver Spring man caught on camera killing his roommate gets 70 years

Andre R. Moore shot his roommate, Michael Sutton, during an argument in 2021. The altercation was caught on camera.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — A Silver Spring man will spend the next 70 years in prison for killing his roommate in 2021.

Andre R. Moore, 24, was sentenced Friday to life in prison, but the judge suspended all but 70 years. He'll also have five years of supervised probation after that.

Moore was convicted in December of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence for the killing of his roommate, 40-year-old Michael Sutton.

On Jan. 18, 2021, at their home along Balmoral Drive in Silver Spring, the two had a verbal altercation, and at some point, Moore shot Sutton in the back of the neck, killing him. The shooting was caught on video by surveillance cameras in the home.

"This is yet another case of senseless, deadly violence involving a ‘ghost gun’ or privately manufactured firearm," State’s Attorney John McCarthy said when Moore was convicted in December. "The weapon was illegally purchased by the defendant about two weeks prior to the murder. We send our deepest condolences to the family of Michael Sutton and thank the Montgomery County Police detectives and Assistant State’s Attorneys Kimberly Cissel and James Dietrich for seeing that justice is served in this matter."
