2 arrested for firing at ATF vehicle in DC

Police say a weapon was recovered and a man was taken into custody, along with a juvenile.

WASHINGTON — DC Police are investigating after shots were fired at a law enforcement vehicle early Friday morning. A watch commander for the Metropolitan Police Department said two people have been taken into custody for the shooting.

According to a sixth district watch commander, the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Minnesota Avenue Southeast and 25th Street Southeast, near St. Francis Xavier School and Boone Elementary School.

Two people, a man and a juvenile, shot at a vehicle from a Toyota Highlander that had been reported stolen. The vehicle had agents from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) inside, according to police. The watch commander told WUSA9 it is unclear if the shooter knew it was a law enforcement vehicle.

No one was hurt in the shooting. Both people involved have been taken into custody and a weapon was recovered. Police did not provide details about what kind of weapon was found at the scene, or how many shots were fired.

Investigators continue to piece together what happened. So far, no additional details have been made public.

While no one was hurt in this shooting, it comes as congressional leaders have zeroed in on violent crime in D.C.

Republican members of the House of Representatives criticized a "soft" on crime approach during a Thursday hearing.

"The crime we are seeing just a few blocks from this building is unprecedented," said Rep. Andy Briggs (R-Arizona) who chairs the Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance.

House Republicans accused the D.C. council of attempting to "defund the police" while Democrats called the hearing a political stunt.

During his opening statements, Briggs placed blame on the U.S. Attorney for D.C.’s prosecutorial failures. "The man who is in charge of prosecuting the criminals has abandoned his responsibilities, that's Matthew Graves," Briggs added.
