WASHINGTON D.C., DC — A recent shooting at an affordable housing complex in Northeast D.C. has tenants demanding that their management company expedite security improvements as demanded by the Attorney General.
Police say Wednesday night a shooting broke out at the Mayfair Mansions Apartments, a 410-unit housing complex in Ward 7.
According to a letter sent out Friday to Mayfair tenants, people who were not on the property started firing through the gate towards a person who was in the complex. The management Enterprise added, "Then they entered the property and tried to gain access to the buildings."
The letter indicates that the shooters were not able to enter the buildings.
"We are actively working with local authorities, who believe this was a targeted incident," Senior Property Manager, Chanel Artis wrote in the letter.
Neighbors told WUSA9 on Friday that bullets are still lodged in their homes. A car owner pointed out three bullets that had gone through the windshield of her vehicle.
Police say no one was injured during the incident, but neighbors are pointing at the act of violence as a reason why Enterprise needs to make security changes urgently.
A mother of three who has been living at Mayfair Mansions for two years, but asked to not be identified, told WUSA9 the violence has her ready to move.
"It's a shame that I am telling my 7-year-old, 3-year-old, and 11-year-old when you hear gunshots, hit the floor," she added.
On Apr. 5 D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced that the owner and manager of Mayfair Mansions will have to pay more than $1 million and make additional investments to improve the health and safety of its tenants.
The settlement with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the result of an investigation prompted by years of complaints about the poor living conditions at the Mayfair apartment complex.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Enterprise will:
- Pay $1,040,000: a portion of which will be used by the District to refund tenants who were forced to live in poor conditions at the property.
- Upgrade security: Mayfair will maintain armed special police officers at the property for a minimum of 262 hours per week, maintain lighting and security cameras at the property, repair and replace broken exterior doors, and tow abandoned vehicles.
- Improve housing conditions: Mayfair will address all outstanding housing code violations within 30 days of the agreement and hire a pest control vendor to service the property at least once a month.
Mayfair tenants admitted that Enterprise has fixed the outside doors to the apartment buildings, but they pointed out the broken gate keypads and doors that allow people into the property.
In the letter sent to tenants, Enterprise reminded residents to be vigilant and asked that they report security concerns to management.
Enterprise did not respond to our inquiries about their current security measures.
