WASHINGTON — As the search continues for a man linked to a heartbreaking police shooting, authorities have identified the suspect and are offering a substantial reward for any leads that could help bring him in.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), in collaboration with the FBI, ATF, and U.S. Marshals Service, has raised the reward to $60,000 for information leading to the arrest of Tyrell Lamonte Bailey, a suspect wanted in connection with a recent weapons offense.
On Aug. 28, just after 5:30 p.m., officers with MPD's Robbery Suppression Unit were searching the area of Quarles Street, Northeast. Officers saw a man getting out of a car and attempted to make contact, but the individual ran away. The suspect ran toward I-295 southbound and jumped from a retaining wall. He was later seen getting rid of a gun into a storm drain before escaping on a motorcycle. The motorcycle driver has been identified and located.
Tragically, during the investigation, as an officer attempted to retrieve the firearm from the storm drain, the weapon discharged, striking the officer. Despite being airlifted to an area hospital for help, the officer later died due to his injuries. The officer was later identified as Wayne David, 51, a 25-year veteran with the police department. MPD extends its heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family and requests the community keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
The suspect, identified Tuesday as Bailey, 27, is described as 5 foot 6 inches tall and approximately 180 pounds, with tattoos covering both arms. He is wanted for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and is the subject of a DC Superior Court arrest warrant.
