TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — Lockdowns at two schools in Prince George’s County have been lifted two and half hours after three people thought to be teenage boys shot a man nearby during an attempted carjacking.
Around 9:38 a.m. Tuesday, Prince George’s County responded to an AutoZone Auto Parts at 7057 Allentown Road. They initially believed the shooting was an attempted robbery at the AutoZone, but police said they found that it was an attempted carjacking in the parking lot.
While the man fought off the three teenagers, he was shot one time, police say. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment in critical but stable condition.
Two of the suspects have been caught by police and are in custody. One is still at large, but police say they have a lead on finding him.
Crossland High School and Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Temple Hills were on lockdown until around 12:30 p.m. while police investigated the shooting in the area. Police say the shooting is not related to either of the schools.
A witness told WUSA9 that the three suspects were wearing what looked like school uniforms.
"All khaki pants, hoodies, bookbags. They were covering up their faces, but they all seemed pretty young," the witness said. "It's surprising to see young guys doing this kind of thing instead of being at school learning, they're out doing this kind of stuff. It seems not right."
Police have not said whether those involved are students at either school. All public schools in Prince George’s County require uniforms.
Crossland High School is across Temple Hill Road from the shopping center. Thurgood Marshall Middle School is a five minute drive away.
This investigation is ongoing. WUSA9 will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
