SILVER SPRING, Md. — Residents of a Silver Spring apartment complex where the decomposing remains of a pregnant woman were discovered say they're mystified why no one alerted authorities.
Police said the body was there for at least a month. The horrible discovery police made at The Enclave was shocking and unexpected.
The eighth-floor apartment of the B building has a makeshift memorial to the 26-year-old mom and her 38-week fetus at the door, which was demolished by a SWAT team that burst in on Friday.
They had come to arrest 31-year-old Torrey Damian Moore after police said he had shot and killed his neighborhood convenience store clerk during a fight in the store Thursday.
But a horrible odor led police to a bedroom where they found the pregnant woman dead who nobody had reported missing.
“The body was in an advanced stage of composition," State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Monday. The victim had been there for at least a month and had been shot to death.
Residents like Hassan Soarkati said they are mystified why neither maintenance workers nor fellow residents didn’t notice or alert anyone.
Apartment managers have not yet responded to requests for comment.
McCarthy said authorities have asked the same questions.
“I don't believe that anyone reported it to the management for the apartment complex, whatever – it had not been reported,” McCarthy said.
Suspect Torrey Damian Moore is charged with three murders now – the convenience store clerk, the pregnant woman, and her 38-week fetus, which McCarthy said was viable when she was killed.
Authorities are waiting on DNA testing before revealing the identity of the woman.
