Police arrest man who shot and killed a 56-year-old grandmother inside of her Maryland home

The investigation, according to authorities, reveals that Sammie Warren purchased a car from one of Filomena Vasquez's sons on Christmas Eve.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Prince George's County police have announced the arrest and charges of a Bowie man for allegedly firing multiple shots through a window and killing a grandmother in her own kitchen on New Year's Day.

Police said Sammie Warren, 23 of Bowie, is charged with the fatal shooting of 56-year-old Filomena Vasquez. On New Year's Day, officers were called to the 7400 blocks of Varnum Street near the Landover Hills community around 11:30 p.m. for reports of shots being fired.

Upon arrival, authorities located Vasquez inside of her home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Vasquez was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The preliminary investigation, according to authorities, reveals that Warren purchased a car from one of Vasquez's sons who lived in the home with her on Christmas Eve. Police said after the sale of the car, Warren then became upset with the condition of the car and demanded a refund.

Vasquez's son denied the request for a refund. Police said Warren began to threaten the son, which included making a threat against his family.

The investigation reveals that Warren walked up to the front of Vasquez's house on New Year's Day and shot into the house multiple times, ultimately striking and killing Filomena Vasquez. Warren, according to authorities, fled the scene.

Through various investigative techniques, police were successful in identifying Warren. According to police, a search warrant was executed for Warren's home. During the search, several officers observed Warren through a window in possession of a gun. Once police entered inside the home, Warren repeatedly ignored commands and resisted arrest.

Police said officers then tackled Warren and took him into custody. During the altercation, police said Warren suffered a minor injury to the head. He was transported to a local hospital and was treated for his injury.

Warren is charged with first-degree murder and related charges. He's currently in custody at the Department of Corrections without bond.
