No charges for officers in fatal shooting of man who opened fire on police in SE

The U.S. Attorney's Office said no charges were warranted for two DC Police officers in connection with the shooting of 33-year-old Arthur Porter.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday no charges were warranted for two DC Police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a District man who opened fire on police last year.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves’ office concluded its review this week into the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Arthur Porter. Porter was killed Oct. 19 in the backyard of a home in the 2800 block of Naylor Road Southeast after he fired at officers and then pointed his gun at another.

In October, WUSA9 reported officers were called to a home in the 2800 block of Gainesville Street Southeast on a report of a person with a gun who was arguing with women. When police arrived, the suspect, later identified as Porter, fled the scene and then opened fire at pursuing officers. Officers then returned fire, including DC Police Officer Dallas Bennett, who was struck during the exchange and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Another officer, DC Police Officer Jonathan Hasstedt, then approached Porter as he was running toward the front of a home on Naylor Road. Graves’ office said its investigation determined Porter pointed his gun at Hasstedt, who then drew his weapon and shot Porter.

Per department policy, both officers were placed on administrative leave during the course of the investigation into the shooting.

Last month, three DC Police officers were shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for animal cruelty. The suspect, 46-year-old Julius James, of D.C., was eventually taken into custody after an hours-long barricade situation. All three officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
