WASHINGTON — Three people have been killed and three people have been injured in a Northwest DC shooting Saturday night in the 600 block of Longfellow Street NW, according to D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee.
Those killed have been identified as 31-year-old Donnetta Dyson, of Northeast, DC, 24-year-old Keenan Braxton, of Northwest, DC, and 37-year-old Johnny Joyner, of Northeast, DC.
Contee said in his comments that those who were injured are expected to recover from their injuries.
A family friend of Braxton's said he has a three-year-old daughter and that his younger brother is one of the three injured victims -- nursing a leg wound.
Multiple friends and neighbors of Dyson's said she has two kids.
WUSA9's Kolbie Satterfield talked with someone who lives close by that said it sounded like a lot of rapid fireworks amid the backdrop of a Labor Day weekend in the District.
"I didn't see much, but I just I heard probably 20 plus gunshots, like different rifles. It's like right outside of our door," neighbor Maria Crossman said.
One of Dyson's neighbors, Wilma Taylor was shocked to hear the news this morning.
“Honestly truly she was a very good neighbor. She mind her business, came in, went to work every day, took care of her kids," she said.
Taylor said they had lived in the same apartment building in northeast D.C. for years.
“She had two wonderful kids…known them since they were babies. toddlers. They grew up right here," she said. "So I'm really, really touched.”
Medstar Washington Hospital Center confirmed that Dyson was an associate there, saying, "We are deeply saddened to learn the death of Donnetta Dyson, an associate who worked at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to Donnetta’s entire family, as well as her friends and colleagues."
The group Gun Violence Archive, which tracks shooting across the United States, estimates that this is at least the 13th shooting in D.C. with four or more victims this year.
According to D.C. Police data published Friday, homicides in particular were already up by 14% before this shooting.
Contee said that investigators are looking for a dark-colored Honda Accord that may have been involved in the shooting. And added that those who were a part of the shooting got out of the car before firing guns down Longfellow Street at a group of people.
Police believe preliminarily that the shooting was targeted, but are still investigating a specific motive.
A reward of up to $110,000 is being offered for information that could lead to arrest. Chief Contee is pleading for the community to please come forward if you have information. You can text it anonymously to 50411.
Contee is also asking for neighbors to check ring/surveillance cameras.
