VIDEO: Moped arson caught on surveillance video in SE DC

Neighbors shared security camera footage of the fires starting at 1:14 a.m. Thursday.

WASHINGTON — Arsonists set multiple mopeds on fire in Southeast D.C. early Thursday morning, the fire department says.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Service responded to a call at 1:16 a.m. on Thursday at 5030 B Street SE. A person on the street reported four motor scooters on fire. Before D.C. Fire arrived, the person was able to put out the fires using a fire extinguisher.

Now, the fire department is investigating the fires as arson.

Investigators say they believe the scooters were set on fire intentionally. And security camera videos shared with WUSA9 by neighbors shows multiple people appearing to set fire to mopeds.

In one video, five people are seen walking up to a moped and huddling around it before it quickly went up in flames. Then, the people ran away.

Another video shows another angle of five people running away from a fire on the street.

A third video that appears to be from a house across the street depicts a fire going up and multiple people running away from it.

Time stamps on all three videos put the time the fires were set at 1:14 a.m.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on this incident is being asked to call 202.673.ARSON.
