Montgomery College resume normal schedule Saturday after threat from former student

Police are looking for 25-year-old Yonas Alemseged Harris for allegedly threatening to "shoot up" the school.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Montgomery College abruptly suspended all operations Friday following a disturbing threat from a former student.

On Friday night, the school released an alert saying all operations would resume as normal on Saturday.

The threats, which were sent via email, prompted the school to contact local law enforcement, and the Takoma Park Police Department is actively investigating the situation. Authorities are working closely with college officials to assess the validity of the threat and ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff across all campuses.

Takoma Park Police identified the suspect Friday evening as 25-year-old Yonas Alemseged Harris. Police said there is an active warrant for his arrest on a charge of making threats of mass violence. Harris is described as 5-foot-2 and 125 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Marcus Rosano, director of media relations and public relations for Montgomery College, emphasized the college’s commitment to prioritizing the well-being of the entire MC community. "The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and the broader MC community is, and will always be, our first priority. After careful consideration and in consultation with authorities, the decision was made to close all College locations and suspend services while the investigation continues," Rosano said in a statement.

The public is encouraged to remain alert and follow further announcements from both Montgomery College and law enforcement as the situation unfolds. Anyone who comes into contact with Harris is urged not to approach him but to instead contact the Takoma Park Police Department immediately at 301-270-1100.
