WASHINGTON — We continue to learn more about the people shot during a deadly hours-long rampage that spanned D.C. and Prince George's County from Monday evening into Tuesday morning, when New Carrollton Police shot the man they believe was responsible in New Lanham Hill. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the string of crimes, but believe he was suffering from a mental health crisis.
The violence began when the man shot a person inside a car around 5:45 p.m. Monday, on K Street Northwest, police said. The person inside the car collapsed onto the sidewalk and was rushed to the hospital. We now know that man is Mike Gill.
Sources tell WUSA9 Gill was in his car picking up his wife from a restaurant in City Center when he was shot. He is currently fighting for his life in grave condition.
Gill is a former GOP representative on the DC Board of Elections. He currently works for the Housing Policy Council. According to his bio on the HPC's website, he previously worked as Chief of Staff to Former U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”) Chairman Christopher Giancarlo and was the Chief Operating Officer of the agency.
He has also represented undocumented juveniles, through the Kids in Need of Defense program, before state and federal courts. He has also volunteered for the Archdiocesan Legal Network.
In a statement shared with WUSA9 by a family spokesperson, Gill is described as a loving father with a great sense of humor.

Following the shooting that put Gill in the hospital, police say AJ Vasquez Jr. was shot and killed in a carjacking at 3rd and N Streets Northeast. His family spoke to WUSA9 saying they are heartbroken by the loss of their son.
