MANASSAS, Va. — Disturbing news for a Manassas high school as the principal told community members about an investigation into a sexual assault that reportedly happened in one of the school's bathrooms at the start of the school year. The attacker is likely still at large.
"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of a deeply troubling incident that occurred at our school," the email from Osbourn Park High School Principal Lisamarie Kane began. "We were recently made aware by a student of an alleged sexual assault that occurred in one of the school bathrooms earlier this school year."
A school resource officer at Osbourn Park started an investigation into the sexual assault last week with the Prince William County Police Department announcing the details on Friday. Not much is known about the attacker's identity or appearance or gender. The attacker was reportedly wearing an animal mask during the August assault.
"An adult female student reported she was in a bathroom located near the gym ... when an unknown individual entered the stall and sexually assaulted her," PWCPD said Friday. "...The individual was reported to be wearing an animal costume mask."
Principal Kane said staff would crack down on bathroom breaks during class time to protect students, among other new protocols.
"We will be implementing additional safety measures, including increased supervision in shared areas," Kane said. "Be assured we are taking all necessary steps to provide a safe and supportive environment for all our students."
