HYATTSVILLE, Md. — A man was shot in the leg and robbed after visiting an ATM at a bank in Hyattsville. Authorities say the suspect appears to have also been involved in another armed robbery in Mount Rainier just minutes apart.
Hyattsville Police say the shooting and armed robbery took place around 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Capital One Bank in the 6400 block of Belcrest Road. The victim was walking through the parking lot with a backpack after visiting an ATM when the suspect drove up to him in a black sedan. The suspect got out of the car and approached the victim, who dropped his backpack. Police say the suspect shot at the victim three times, with one bullet striking him in the leg.
The suspect then escaped with the backpack. He was described as wearing a dark top and white ski mask. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was conscious and breathing.
The Mount Rainier Police Department's (MRPD) Chief Linwood Alston says the same suspect appears to have committed another armed robbery outside a 7-Eleven in Mount Rainier within minutes of the Hyattsville shooting.
MRPD was called to the scene at 5:47 p.m. Saturday. They say the suspect approached and robbed a citizen at gunpoint outside the convenience store on Varnum Street before fleeing. The victim was not injured.
