WASHINGTON — A D.C. resident who was just trying to do yardwork wound up the victim of a crime, robbed of hundreds of dollars. Police are searching for his attacker.
Around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Deanwood, the man robbed told WUSA9 he was shoveling dirt from in front of his house into the bed of a truck when a man approached him, pointed a gun at him and demanded money.
The incident was caught on home surveillance video, which was shared by DC Police. The video shows another man walk towards the victim’s truck and then, towards his home.
“It’s unbelievable. Broad daylight, early in the morning," said a neighbor that didn't want to be identified.
The neighbor said the robbery has been a wakeup call for him.
“It’s an area where you have to watch your back," he said. "You just have to be vigilant when you’re out. It used to be, you don’t want to go out after dark. Well, this happened at 11 o’clock in the morning. What time is safe?”
The neighbor said the robbery has caused people in the neighborhood to look over their shoulder more often.
“I ordered a gun immediately," the neighbor said. "I decided it was time, so I’m going to be prepared. People are just fed up. That’s why I got a gun, just fed up.”
The man robbed told WUSA9 the suspect made off with around $300 in cash. It happened just down the street from Metro Police’s Sixth District Headquarters.
“The criminals are so brazen that they don’t care the police station is less than a mile away," said the neighbor. "You would think we feel safe because it’s over there, we don’t. We still don’t, in the neighborhood, feel safe.”
Police are offering up to $10,000 for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction.
