Man indicted on charges of killing woman whose body was found inside a tent in Fairfax Co.

Cara Abbruscato was found dead inside a tent at Burke Lake Park in Fairfax Station on September 30, 2023.

WASHINGTON — A man police allege is responsible for killing a woman, whose body was later found inside a tent in Fairfax County, was indicted on murder charges Monday.

According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano a grand jury indicted Rami El-Sayed for the September 2023 death of 40-year-old Cara Abbruscato.

Abbruscato was found dead inside a tent at Burke Lake Park in Fairfax Station on September 30, 2023. Dispatch audio says by the time officers arrived, there were flies around the tent with her legs sticking out, so it's not clear exactly when she died.

El-Sayed was identified as a person of interest in her death. Officials found him two days later in Paterson, New Jersey. Police say El-Sayed was driving Abbruscato vehicle, when it was pinged in New Jersey through license plate readers.

In October, officers said Abbruscato and El-Sayed knew each other; they met a short time before -- between seven and 10 days.

A grand jury indicted El-Sayed on second-degree murder charges on Monday. He is expected to appear in court again on May 23.
