PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — A 27-year-old man is facing charges after police say he shot and killed the head of security at a skating rink where he used to work as security in Prince George's County in February.
According to the Prince George's County Police Department (PGCPD), Omar Delonte Smith was arrested for the deadly shooting at the DMV All Skate Social skating rink in Temple Hills.
Officers were called to the rink on Branch Avenue around 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 23. When officers arrived they found Eugene Smith, 31, lying in the doorway. He was pronounced dead at the rink.
Court documents show Eugene Smith was the owner of the security company that provided help to the skating rink. He wasn't working at the time but had come to the rink to check on the security guards he had assigned that night.
According to the charging document, a nearby surveillance camera captured the deadly shooting. The video reportedly shows a dark grey-colored Nissan sedan pull up to the skating rink just before 11:30 p.m. Two people appear to speak with the driver, believed to be Omar Delonte Smith.
A short time later, Eugene Smith reportedly came outside and walked toward the Nissan. That is when police claim the driver reached out the front passenger side window with a gun and opened fire on Eugene Smith.
Investigators say Eugene Smith tried to run but was hit and fell into the doorway of the skating rink, where he died.
Following the shooting, the Nissan reportedly drove away.
Homicide detectives spoke with witnesses, including the two people who spoke with Omar Delonte Smith just before the deadly shooting and learned the car belonged to someone called "Little O" who had previously worked as part of Eugene Smith's security company.
Witnesses told detectives "Little O," later identified as Omar Delonte Smith, was fired in January 2023 for allegedly stealing, while working security at the skating rink and was reportedly angry about not receiving his last paycheck.
A third witness told detectives Eugene Smith has been receiving death threats through text messages.
Detectives believe the shooting was due to the employment dispute.
Omar Delonte Smith has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and related charges. He’s in custody in the Richmond, Virginia area awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County.
