WASHINGTON — A man is facing arson charges after fire officials say he repeatedly set an apartment on fire using burning items in Southeast D.C.
According to the DC Fire and EMS, 53-year-old Michael Hawkins was arrested in connection to two fires that happened on Thursday and Friday in the 2100 block of Suitland Terrace SE.
Fire officials say both fires took place at the same apartment in the morning. In both cases, Hawkins allegedly threw burning items at the apartment. The second fire caused significant damage and took about a dozen units and 60 firefighters to get the flames under control.
No injuries were reported in either fire but four residents were displaced from the burned units. Aid is being provided by the American Red Cross.
