ASHBURN, Va. — The former president of a local parent-teacher organization has been arrested and charged with felony embezzlement for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the PTO.
Kimberly Medina, 43, was elected the president of the Moorefield Station Elementary School PTO in September 2021. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) started to investigate the missing funds in December 2023 after the school’s principal and members of the PTO contacted deputies. The PTO Board removed Medina in December when the investigation began.
Court documents show that one of the biggest red flags for other members of the PTO was that only Medina had access to the organization's bank account. When they looked into the account, funds were missing and someone had written several large dollar amount checks from the account to Medina's personal account. That's when LCSO got involved.
The sheriff’s office found that Medina had embezzled $83,200 between February and September 2023. Investigators concluded Medina spent the money on numerous Royal Caribbean cruises, shopping and even Amazon.com purchases.
The investigation determined the embezzlement was for personal use and that no other people were involved. Medina is not an employee of Loudoun County Public Schools and no public money was embezzled, as the money taken was all privately fundraised.
Medina turned herself in on Aug. 7 and was released of her own recognizance. Her arraignment will be on Sept. 4 at 1:05 p.m.
