OXON HILL, Md. — On Monday morning, the Oxon Hill, Maryland community will be holding a rally at Potomac High School for Kayla - the 14-year-old girl who was assaulted in school on Dec. 5 and left with a broken nose and hand.
Juanita Caldwell told WUSA9 her 14-year-old daughter Kayla has nightmares about the attack.
“Three in the morning, she woke up saying she had a nightmare that the same people put a hit on her.” Caldwell, said.
On Dec. 5, Juanita said her daughter was the victim of an alleged assault that left her with a broken nose, hand and several bruises.
WUSA9 obtained video taken by a student where it appears to show Kayla being punched in the head on the floor of a closet inside the school.
Juanita said school staff told her Kayla was attacked by a group of seven girls, and it stemmed from an altercation earlier in the day. Mom says the girls that assaulted her daughter are still free.
“I want them arrested. If you can’t arrest them, arrest their parents.” Caldwell, said.
This Monday, community activists Joseph Tolbert will hold a rally for Kayla, to bring awareness and to express disappointment with the Prince George's County Police Department and the Attorney General’s office.
“I can’t believe we have video. These children are easily identified. None of them have been arrested. I’m very disappointed in the PGCPD and the AG's office. It doesn’t make any sense.” Tolbert, said.
Tolbert told WUSA9 he's also hoping the rally will send a message to other students.
“We will not stand for you to go to school and beat people and get away with it.” he said.
It’s still unclear how many students are involved and what consequences they will face.
Juanita said she’s reached out to the school, the chief of police, Gov. Wes Moore and council members, but she’s received no help or answers.
“They don’t care. They didn’t care until I brought this to the news.” Caldwell, said.
The teen’s mom said she will be meeting with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy to discuss the incident.
The rally is scheduled for Mon,, Dec. 16 at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill at 7 a.m.
