FAIRFAX, Va. — The man responsible for the death of two Oakton High School students has been sentenced by a jury to four years in prison.
Usman Shahid, 20, was convicted by a jury Wednesday on two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the crash that killed Ada Gabriela Martinez Nolasco,14, and Leeyan Hanjia Yan, 15, in 2022. On Friday, the same jury sentenced Shahid.
On June 7, 2022, Shahid was speeding down Blake Lane when he crashed into an SUV attempting to make a left turn onto Five Oaks Road. The collision caused Shahid’s car to barrel onto the sidewalk, striking and killing the two teen girls and an additional victim who were walking home from school. The thid student survived the crash.
During the trial, a crash expert was able to prove that Shahid’s speeding was the reason for the initial crash with the SUV and the subsequent pedestrian collision. Data recorder from the vehicle showed that Shahid continued to accelerate from 60 mph to 81 mph just seconds after the crash and did not attempt to brake at any point.
Shahid’s sentencing will be finalized by a judge later this year. The judge could choose to lower the sentence but cannot increase it.
