Neighborhood Fourth of July party may be over after shooting left boy critically injured

Police say a young boy was seriously injured when at least two people opened fire on the 4500 block of Akron Street.

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — A Prince George's County tradition may be over for good following Thursday night's shooting that left two adults and a child injured in the Temple Hills neighborhood.

Prince George's County Police say at least two people opened fire on the 4500 block of Akron street just before 8 p.m. One adult was shot and injured, another adult was grazed by a bullet, and a boy was seriously injured, according to investigators.

Videos of the celebration showed dozens of families and young kids on Akron Street minutes before the gunfire erupted.

"I thought it was scattered fireworks and then I hear 'they're shooting, they're shooting,' so I had to go grab my kids," a mother who asked not to be identified told reporters Friday morning. "Like two of my sons is out here, my niece and my nephew was out here."

Ricardo Richardson says he was forced to get on the ground with his son as he watched the injured boy fight for his life.

"Seeing him on the ground like that, I couldn't sleep. I was up all night," he told WUSA9.

Neighbors say the event attracted people outside of their neighborhood. Multiple residents said they do not plan to continue the celebration following the recent violence.

A couple who has lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years showed WUSA9 how a bullet went through their front window and was lodged into their living room wall. They say crowds of people fled from the scene running for cover.

"All of these occasions, the ones that our community have a right to enjoy together, they had a right to enjoy coming together tonight as families," County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said Thursday night at a press conference. "They turn violent when someone brings a gun. We have got to get these guns off the street."

Police have not provided a description of the shooters sought in this investigation.
