MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A Georgia man was sentenced to prison for driving drunk for a third time, resulting in the death of a mother of three.
Jayleen Hannor was sentenced on Friday to 18 years in prison, with all but eight years suspended, for a crash dating back to August 2023. On Aug. 1, after a night of drinking, Hannor was driving along the outer loop of I-495. At some point, he began driving in the opposite direction along I-270 and I-495 when he struck a Nissan Pathfinder head-on.
The crash disrupted the flow of traffic so badly that a third car, a Lexus RX, couldn't avoid it and also collided with the Pathfinder.
The crash killed the driver of the Pathfinder, Elizabeth Velez, left her teenage daughter with life-threatening injuries and injured her husband and two other children ages eight and one. The family was driving from Pennsylvania to South Carolina for vacation.
The passengers of the Lexus RX were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Hannor ran away and was later located walking along the inner loop of the beltway near the Connecticut Avenue exit. A breath test showed that his alcohol levels were more than twice the legal limit.
This wasn't the first time Hannor was charged with drunk driving. It was his third offense in 13 months. He is facing charges for the other two incidents in Georgia where they occurred.
It is uncertain if/when he will be extradited to Georgia for the other charges. Hannor will also have to serve five years of supervised probation once released.
