Suspects approach man pumping gas at Northwest DC Exxon showing guns, run away after gas is poured on them

Police say the suspects left the location after the victim sprayed them with gas.

WASHINGTON — An investigation is underway after a man said he was approached while trying to get gas in Northwest D.C. by people with guns early Wednesday morning.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to an Exxon station on Rhode Island Avenue Northwest, near 3rd Street Northwest, around 5:45 a.m. after a report of multiple people brandishing guns at the man. Police say the alleged attackers left the location after the man sprayed them with gas.

One of the people with guns did fire their gun once before taking off, but no one was hurt.

WUSA9 talked to the man, who wishes to remain unidentified for his own safety, about what happened.

"I was here trying to get gas and some fellas came with a car...came out with a long gun and pointed gun at me," he said. "So I used a gas pump, pour gas on them and they shot at me, and ran away."

He said he got the idea to do this tactic from a video on YouTube

The man told WUSA9 that the suspects did not say anything to him, and that it was two of them that exited the silver vehicle -- showing long guns to him. He also said he poured the gas on their faces.

The investigation into the case is active and ongoing.
