MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A former Montgomery County elementary school teacher will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life after he pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges.
John Vigna, 57, sexually abused multiple students at Cloverly Elementary School between 2001 and 2016. He had been teaching at the elementary school since October 1991 and taught third, fourth and fifth graders.
Vigna was convicted of sexually abusing students in 2017 and sentenced to 48 years in prison after five students reported that they had been touched inappropriately while sitting on his lap. However, that conviction was overturned in July 2023. Vigna was then released on bond pending a new trial.
On Tuesday, Vigna was sentenced after pleading guilty to new charges of sexual child abuse and abuse of a minor in March. A Montgomery County judge sentenced Vigna to 30 years in prison with all but the time he had already served suspended.
Additionally, Virgna will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and complete five years of probation and he cannot have any unsupervised contact with minors. He has also been ordered to stay away from his victims and their families.
