'That was an innocent baby in her stomach' | Family says Manassas woman was pregnant when she was killed by her cousin

Edward Jackson Bland, 36, is charged with killing his cousin Leann Harris, 34, and her friend Asia Payne, 22.

MANASSAS, Va. — The family of a woman killed in a double shooting inside a Prince William County apartment says her daughter was four months pregnant when she was allegedly shot by her own cousin.

Prince William County Police say that early Tuesday morning they found Leann Harris, 34, and her friend Asia Payne 22, dead at the Westgate Apartments in Manassas.

"That is an innocent baby in her stomach that I have to lay to rest with my daughter. It's not fair, it's not," Harris' mother, May Twyman told WUSA9 following a vigil for her daughter at Stonewall Park in Manassas.

Edward James Jackson Bland, is facing murder charges in connection to the death of the two women. The 36-year-old suspect is Harris' cousin according to the victim's family.

Jackson Bland was arrested by the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office.

Prince William County Police say that the night of the deadly shooting, Bland also carjacked a man outside the Westgate Apartments.

"My baby was shot in the head. In the head, in the temple right here. I had to go identify my baby laying down on that table. This is hard. I don't wish this on anyone," Twyman added.

Harris' family says they have received some information about what happened the night of the shooting, but they still do not have a clear reason why Jackson Bland allegedly shot his cousin who he was so close with. "Be careful the company you keep, and be where you're supposed to be at the right time," Leann Harris' sister Charmine Harris said.

During the vigil loved ones described Harris' outgoing personality. "A good-hearted person, loved to have fun, loved to be the life of the party, and the kind to bring the family together," Leann Harris' sister-in-law Amanda Harris said.

Harris leaves behind three children ages, 15, 14, and four.

"I loved her with everything in me and I am sorry that he decided to do that to her that night," said Naveah Harris, Leann's oldest daughter.

The 15-year-old says she will keep her mother's memory alive by reminding her little brother how much she cared for him. "Mommy loved you very much and she'll always love you no matter what happened to her," Naveah Harris added.

Jackson Bland is due back in court on Apr. 8. He is facing charges in connection to the carjacking and the women's deaths.
