FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Editor's Note: This video is from November 2022 about 15 THC gummies that killed a 4-year-old Virginia boy.
A burglary call turned into an arrest of a Fairfax County business owner after police say they found marijuana, mushrooms, THC, and several THC-infused packages inside the owner's shop.
Officers responded to the VaSparx Vape and Tobacco on Cooper Road in the Mount Vernon District for a report of a burglary on the morning of Dec. 5, according to Fairfax County Police Department.
Police said when detectives arrived at the shop, they found large quantities of marijuana, mushrooms, and several items containing THC, including gummies, vapes, honey, and barbeque sauce packets.
"While they were there, they noticed there was a tub, a plastic tub, that looked like it had been tampered with," Lt. Daniel Spital, of Fairfax County Police, said. "When they looked inside, they discovered these gummies which were not CBD product, but THC product. THC and mushrooms."
Marijuana, THC, and mushrooms to look like candy packets
Officers arrested the owner of the shop, Charan Preet Singh, 31, of Haymarket, and charged him with two counts of possession with intent to distribute.
THC edibles are not legal to sell in Virginia outside of specially licensed stores. VaSparx Vape and Tobacco did not have that license.
Police say the packaging used is very similar to popular candy brands.
"Any of these kids may think they are eating just normal candy, when realistically they are eating something that could cause them severe harm," Spital said.
Some of the packages had very high dosage amounts, enough to cause harm to those inexperienced with THC, according to doctors.
The store’s owner did not respond to WUSA9's request for comment. An employee told WUSA9 the burglar broke through the front door and targeted the vapes along the back wall. Fairfax Police does not have a suspect at this time.
