Teen arrested after explosive found in Rockville mailbox, police say

Police said similar incidents have occurred in the Glen Hills area, starting in November.

WASHINGTON — A 17-year-old has been arrested after an explosive device was found inside a Rockville mailbox on Monday, Montgomery County Police said.  

A homeowner in the 1200 block of Newgate Road in the Glen Park neighborhood opened their mailbox and notified police immediately after spotting the device. According to Montgomery County Police, a bomb squad robot was then sent to the home to disassemble what appeared to be an altered firework.

On Tuesday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jason Blake said investigators arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the crime. The teen has been charged with the use and possession of a destructive device.

Police are still investigating the teenager's motive behind planting the firework and have stated they believe there are other suspects potentially involved. The teen may also be involved with other incidents near the Glen Hills area which started in November, according to police.
