WASHINGTON โ After nearly two months on the run, escaped murder suspect Christopher Haynes has been captured. Haynes escaped police custody in early September from George Washington University Hospital.
A manhunt for Haynes finally came to an end on Thursday following an intense search and offering a reward of up to $30,000 for information.
Investigators say Haynes was arrested in Oxon Hill around 10:30 a.m. He was taken into custody without incident by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Haynes is also being charged with escape.
Details about how he was able to remain at large for so long have not been released.
Haynes was arrested the same day of his escape for allegedly shooting 33-year-old Brent Hayward of Gainesville, Virginia in the head at a gas station on Kenilworth Avenue in August. Nearby home surveillance video captured Haynes jumping over a fence.
Haywardโs older brother Shannon Gilliam spoke with WUSA9 after Haynes was once again taken into custody.
"While we were disappointed to learn that Christopher Haynes was captured alive, we're glad that he no longer gets to enjoy life on the outside," Gilliam said on behalf of his family. "Hopefully the rest of his existence is as miserable as possible."
Since his escape, MPD said they received numerous reports of possible sightings. Anyone who was found to have aided and abetted Haynes will also be criminally charged, according to police. So far, no other arrests have been made.
