SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — A Spotsylvania County School District employee has been fired after a video reportedly showed her hitting a 6-year-old elementary school student with a shoe.
According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Cedar Forest Elementary School heard on April 11 that a worker had assaulted a student. While investigating, officials found a video of the incident.
Investigators say, 73-year-old Gloria Joan Jackson, was working as a behavioral interventionist employee when she hit a 6-year-old boy with a shoe. The child was not injured in the assault.
A job listing posted on Glassdoor says a behavior interventionist addresses students' inappropriate behaviors and provides a means to help students become more academically successful. Additionally, the role provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies and "ascribes to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality."
Jackson has since been arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor assault and battery. A trial in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court has been scheduled for July 10.
The sheriff's office says the school division immediately placed Jackson on leave and later fired her.
