DNA connects Loudoun County man to multiple sexual assaults dating back to 1998

In one assault in 2000, police say the suspect jumped from a second-story balcony to escape.

FAIRFAX, Va. — A Loudoun County man is facing charges after police say DNA evidence linked him to multiple reported sexual offenses going back as far as 26 years.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, 58-year-old Edward Eugene Pottmyer was arrested on June 5 with the help of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the first attack was reported on Sept. 9, 1998. A 48-year-old jogger told police she was assaulted on a bike path in the Fair Lakes area by a man who implied he had a knife. The man ran away after assaulting the jogger.

The second attack happened nearly a year later on Aug. 3, 2000, at a home in the 11900 block of Parkside Drive in Fairfax. Detectives say a 66-year-old woman was sleeping when she awoke at 11 p.m. to someone assaulting her. The attacker escaped by jumping from a second-story balcony and running away.

The next assault didn't happen until Dec. 6, 2004, when police say a 51-year-old woman was in her basement in the 9900 block of Whitewater Drive in Burke. She told police she saw a man exposing himself outside her sliding glass door. The man ran after the victim yelled.

Investigators say Pottmyer was connected to all three assaults using DNA testing. He has since been charged with forcible sodomy and abduction with intent to defile. He is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
