WASHINGTON — A 19-year-old D.C. man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday for robbing two people at gunpoint using fake advertisements on Facebook Marketplace last year.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) says Isaiah Green pleaded guilty to two counts of armed robbery on May 2, 2024. Judge Lynn Leibovitz in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia presided over the case and ordered Green to serve five years of supervised release.
During the case, prosecutors argued Green robbed two victims at gunpoint on Aug. 19, 2023, and Dec. 3, 2023, respectively. Prior to the first robbery, Green had advertised a Stihl brand saw for sale on Facebook Marketplace. When contacted by the first victim, Green arranged a meeting in the 5100 block of B St. SE. Green and an accomplice reportedly grabbed the victim and robbed him at gunpoint when he arrived, taking his cell phone, wallet, credit and debit cards, and checks totaling $1,500. The victim was able to call 911 after the robbery using another person's phone.
Police say Green later advertised a Hilti laser for sale on the platform to lure a second victim. Green set up a meeting with the second victim in the 3600 block of Highwood Drive, SE. The victim arrived with his wife and was approached by two assailants who held him at gunpoint once he got out of his car. He was robbed of his wallet, containing cash and bank cards, as well as an iPhone 13. The gunmen then reportedly pointed their weapons at the second victim's wife and rifled through the center console of the car to steal additional cash and a card. All three men then drove off together.
MPD, along with the Prince George’s County Police, obtained evidence from Facebook to identify Green. Police say they executed a search warrant at Green’s residence on Dec. 21, 2023. That search led to the recovery of a phone that was linked to the Facebook account used in the first robbery, as well as the second victim's wallet, credit cards and identification card. The Hilti laser and a box used to lure Victim 2 from his car were also found.
