Man dies of complications after being beaten with shovel, police investigate his death as a homicide

When officers arrived to the scene they found three men who had been attacked by a man with a shovel.

WASHINGTON — D.C. Police are now investigating an assault that took place in October 2023 as a homicide.

On October 12, 2023, officers responded to 4th Street, Northeast, at 6:40 a.m. for reports of an assault. When they arrived they found three men who had been attacked by a man with a shovel. All three men were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The man with the shovel, 62-year-old Vincent Hemphill, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Kill.

On Monday, January 22, one of the victims of the attack passed away from his injuries. The man was identified as 81-year-old Charles Short. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Maryland conducted an autopsy and notified MPD on Thursday that Short’s cause of death was complications from blunt force trauma.

Homicide detectives will work with the United States Attorney to upgrade Hemphill's charges.

Anyone with information may contact detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
