Someone threw a rock through City-State Brewing's window. Here's how it responded

Owner James Warner and the staff made the best of a bad situation.

WASHINGTON — Police are searching for two people who threw a rock through a D.C. brewery's window over the weekend. Surveillance video from City-State Brewing Company in the Edgewood neighborhood shows someone toss the rock through the front window and two people head inside. It happened on Sunday morning around 3 a.m.

Owner James Warner says the two men seen on camera made off with alcohol and some blank checks, but so far no arrests have been made.

But Warner and the team made the best of a bad situation. After making the discovery and boarding up the window, the brewery posted on social media saying they were still open, and inviting customers to come paint the rock.

A former congressional aide, Warner opened City-State Brewing in 2021. The 13,000 square-foot microbrewery and tap room sits right off the Metropolitan Branch Trail. The brewery features many D.C.-themed beers that pay homage to the District and its history.

Its newest beer, Lost Laws Pilsner, salutes beating Jim Crow in D.C. on June 8, 1953, with the so-called "lost laws" of 1873.

"We believe in D.C. We love this neighborhood. We're sorry that it happened, and we hope that folks will continue to turn out and join us in continuing to celebrate the history and culture of D.C.," Warner said.

Police are still searching for the people responsible for the vandalism. If anyone recognizes them, they are asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099.
