Recreation center ransacked in DC, police investigating

Police say a back glass door was smashed with a rock.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating a break-in at a recreation center in D.C.'s Ward 7. According to a police report, someone used a rock to smash in the back glass door of Benning Stoddert Community Center in Southeast.

Police are still investigating, but the incident report says DC Police responded to the rec center located off of Minnesota Avenue and East Capitol Streets around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. A caller told police that they arrived at the community center to find a broken glass door and trophies on the ground.

A responding officer found a rock laying next to the broken door. Another glass door leading into an office was also smashed. The incident report says the office was "ransacked." It is not clear whether anything was taken during the break-in, but the incident report says the glass doors were valued at around $600 each.

So far, police have not made any arrests in this case. Descriptions of the person or people involved have not been made public.
