It’s not the first time Montgomery County has seen its share of bank robberies. In a separate incident in 2020, a 71-year-old man went into custody after attempting to rob a PNC Bank in Potomac.

Montgomery County Police said they received a call the morning of Aug. 4 from an employee inside the PNC Bank off River Road, saying the location was being held up by gunpoint.

Officers said James Wersick entered the bank and began to yell at the customers and employees to move to a corner, then pointed a gun at the teller, stating that he had been watching her and knew where she lived. He demanded she put money into a white bag he had brought with him and then attempted to leave, where he encountered an officer.

He later admitted to committing six armed robberies of banks across the county.
