WASHINGTON — Court documents are giving new insight into a shooting that left an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer injured earlier this week.
The shooting happened near 7th and Oglethorpe streets in Northwest D.C. just after noon on Monday. According to MPD, the suspects shot at a car with the off-duty officer inside.
The officer, a captain with 18 years of experience, was injured in the shooting but was able to drive himself the quarter mile to the 4th District Station. Originally, it was reported that the officer was shot but court documents explain that he was not in fact shot but was cut by glass shards on both of his eyes and his forehead.
According to court documents, the officer was on his way to work when while driving around Missouri Avenue and 3rd Street, Northwest, he noticed a car behind him. At some point, the car allegedly pulled up to the right of the officer's car and "abruptly sped up to cut in front of him."
This was the beginning of a reported back-and-forth between the two drivers that started at 12:08 p.m. and lasted around a minute before the shooting happened.
Court documents say the officer continued driving while the other car stayed to his right. A short time later, the other driver is accused of once again speeding up to cut in front of the officer.
"This time, the [officer] changed lanes to the right and attempted to bypass the suspect vehicle, but the suspect vehicle began swerving across both lanes in front of the vehicle to prevent him from passing," the court documents read.
The officer then took out his phone and began recording through the front of his windshield before the accused gunman pulled into the mouth of an alley along 7th Street near Oglethorpe Street, Northwest.
The officer stopped his car on the street behind the suspect's car. That is when court documents allege a person riding in the passenger seat of the car got out and began shooting at the officer's car. A witness recalled to police hearing around four shots being fire toward the officer's car.
According to court documents, the shooter and the officer hadn't said anything to each other before or after the shooting.
The officer was able to drive to the Fourth District station and alerted officers in the station that he was just shot. He provided officers with a partial license plate and description of the vehicle.
While police searched for the gunman, the officer was taken to an area hospital for help regarding the cuts on his eyes and face from the glass shards.
The car the accused gunman was riding in was located through the usage of license plate readers. Just 23 minutes after the shooting, a sergeant in MPD's air support unit spotted the wanted vehicle from "Falcon 1."
Officers chased the vehicle until the driver crashed near the intersection of Dodge Park Road and Landover Road in Hyattsville, Maryland.
In court documents, officers describe something being through out of the vehicle during the chase. A K-9 officer was used to canvass the area and later reportedly found a tan-colored 9mm Springfield Hellcat.
Officers arrested 21-year-old Rasheed Thorne, of Northwest, D.C., and 21-year-old William Walker, of Upper Marlboro, MD, following the crash. Walker has since been extradited to Washington D.C. to face a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Thorne remains in custody in Prince George's County.
